Meagher Trophy Criteria

MEAGHER TROPHY CRITERIA

The winner of the Meagher Trophy will be the sailor with the lowest combined scores from the following regattas:

AWAY REGATTAS

Florida State Championships

U.S. National Championships

North American Championships

Midwinters

Orange Bowl

HOME REGATTAS

LYC Fall Series

LYC Winter Series

LYC Spring Series

Commodore's Cup

For the purpose of this award:

  • Only series scores (final position in each regatta) will be counted for the total.
  • Sailors may only be scored for regattas they entered and sailed under the LYC burgee.
  • In each regatta, sailors will be scored against other LYC sailors only, with first place awarded to the highest-finishing LYC boat in the regatta, second place to the next highest, and so on.
  • A sailor who does not sail in a qualifying event receives a score for that regatta equal to one plus the number of LYC boats entered in the qualifying regatta with the greatest number of LYC sailors entered.
  • Each sailor’s worst Away regatta score and worst Home regatta score will be discarded.
  • In the event that two or more boats are tied, the tie will be broken in favor of the boat that beat the other(s) in the last qualifying regatta in which all tied boats started against one another.
  • Each year following the award, the LYC Optimist Committee may add or subtract qualifying regattas for the coming year, provided that no qualifying regatta has begun.

Christopher Williford Wins Large Argetinian Regatta!

CHRISTOPHER WILLIFORD WINS A PRESTIGIOUS ARGENTINIAN REGATTA

LYC Opti Sailor Christopher Williford journeyed south to Argentina to compete in a major International Optimist Regatta.  The Argentine Yacht Club Regatta Mar del Plata is a significant accomplishment for the young sailor. This is the first time an American has won this event. Congratulations Christopher! Brother Duncan also did very well placing fifth. The Argentine population is much more enthusiastic about sail racing than the US Population. Christopher and Duncan must certainly have stories to tell about going into a lion's den and walking out with the dinner and dessert! Look for a story here soon.

2008
LYC Opti Racing is having an OUTSTANDING 2008! It has been some time since the Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Program has ever seen such sustained growth. For the past three years the Sailing Program has been steadily growing not only in program participation, but also in results, and now girth. This past July LYC sent 25 sailors and three coaches to the USODA National Championship on Long Island, NY. Last summer our Learn to Sail program recruited over 20 sailors to participate on the year round sailing team, while our Championship Fleet retained 100% of its participants.

Late this July the LYC Opti Racing Team participated in the 2008 USODA National Team Racing, Girls, and Fleet Racing Championships.
Congratulations to Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailor Christopher Williford for competing on the gold division winning team racing team, and also to Lauderdale Yacht Club Team 1 for finishing fourth place in the gold division at the National Championship- the top yacht club team at the event. LYC 1 competed with Martina Sly, Haley Fox, Nikki Medley, and Erika Reineke. LYC Team 2 competed in the silver division and placed third. LYC 2 competitors were Calli Lewis, Mack Fox, Sophia Reineke, and Grant Dixon.

Congratulations to Erika Reineke for her second consecutive year to win the USODA Girls National Championship, the competition was difficult- many of the top sailors in the country today are girls. LYC coach Lindsay Allen led all nine of our girls at the USODA Girls National Championship. Other top LYC Girl’s Nationals participants included Nikki Medley and Haley Fox.  Anna Weis won the white fleet with Alie Toppa in 3rd, Sophia Reineke in 4th and Calli Lewis in 12th.

Lauderdale Yacht Club brought home some hardware at the Fleet Racing Nationals as well. Christopher Williford sailed an impressive event winning overall, deemed the 2008 USODA National Champion. Erika Reineke also sailed an impressive event taking fourth overall and finishing as the top girl. Also, Liza Toppa won the final race of the pearl division! Another great accomplishment was LYC qualified ten sailors for the Team Trials.

Congratulations to all of our sailors that participated in the National Championship, what a great way to wrap up the summer. Stay tuned next month as our race team gets tuned up to compete at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Championship
